Practical support work
What are practical support workers?
Practical support workers can provide assistance in many areas of a student's study and university life, including: taking notes in lectures, providing support in locating and collecting material from the library, acting as a scribe in examinations, or giving general support in ensuring that students can get from class to class or can orientate themselves on campus.
Support workers
Our support workers are punctual, professional and reliable and are expected to provide 24 hours notice if unable to attend an arranged support session. Support workers are aware of relevant equalities legislation and will communicate directly with students to agree the details of the support to be provided.

Note takers
Note takers will provide students with comprehensive, accurate and legible notes from their teaching sessions, which will be emailed to the student within 24 hours (if provided electronically).
Library support assistants
Library support assistants can support students to search library catalogues, locate and collect, photocopy or scan materials.
Scribes
Scribes can support a student in a class or exam by writing or typing what a student dictates. They employ clear handwriting and/or accurate keyboard skills and will have good spelling and punctuation skills.
Practical Assistants
Practical assistants are referred to in a number of ways - Mobility Assistant; Personal
Assistant; Non-Medical Helper (Physical Assistance); Campus Orientation; Ongoing Mobility Assistance; General Support Worker (Carrying); Buddy Campus Orientation; Social Support - and can provide support in all of these areas.
Practical assistant work can help support students in numerous tasks and activities associated with their studies, including:
As some tasks and activities requiring support will be ongoing throughout a student's course, while others may only be necessary until a student achieves confidence, support assistant will liaise on an ongoing basis with students to arrange the details of support and to regularly review how the support is working.

- support in general campus orientation and finding out where things are located;
